Table of Contents

This CCNP Voice CVOICE v8.0 Video on Demand Product covers version eight of implementing Cisco Unified Communications Voice over IP, or CVOICE v8.0.  By watching this VoD you will be preparing for the CVOICE Exam Number:  642-437, which is part of the CCNP Voice certification track.  The VoD is separated into six modules, each of which covers the topics on the CVOICE Blueprint.  Each one of the modules is designed to build on the previous topic, which leads up to configuring a complete working Unified Communications environment.  Every module starts off with a lecture covering the topics in each of the sections.  Each major section is then followed up with a live configuration demonstration exercise to help you see the lecture topics actually applied to a live router.  Each demonstration exercise is complete with a lab network diagram and objectives.

The CVOICE v8.0 VOD is covered in the following modules:

  • Module 1 Voice Gateways
  • Module 2 VoIP Call Legs
  • Module 3 Dial-Plan
  • Module 4 Gatekeeper and Cisco Unified Border Element
  • Module 5 Quality of Service
  • Module 6 Unified Communication Manager Express

Module 1: Voice Gateways

Voice gateways are the bridge between the traditional telephony infrastructure and IP telephony network. In this module you will learn about the different types of voice gateways and voice ports.  You will also learn about the call routing process, deployment scenarios, digital signal processors (DSPs), and codecs.

After viewing this module you will be able to:

  • Explain traditional telephony and its components.
  • Describe a voice gateway and how to deploy it.
  • Explain and configure analog and digital voice ports.
  • Describe call-legs and configure pots dial-peers.
  • Explain and configure codecs and DSPs.

Module 2: VoIP Call Legs

VoIP Call Legs are the network hops that a VoIP transmission takes from one gateway to the next.  This module will teach you how to configure and customize VoIP call legs.  You will also gain an understanding of the analog to digital conversion process and all of the different VoIP protocols used to setup and transport a VoIP call.

After viewing this module you will be able to:

  • Explain the analog to digital conversion process.
  • Describe the properties of RTP.
  • Explain the call setup and tear down of the various call signaling protocols.
  • Describe what affects VoIP Quality and the ways to measure it.
  • Use VoIP to transmit Faxes and DTMF.
  • Configure VoIP dial-peers.

Module 3: Dial-Plan

Module 3 will explain the components that make up a Dial-Plan.  This includes the proper presentation of calling and the called number to the public switch telephony network (PSTN).  You will learn about private and public number plans such as the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) and E.164.  This module will also go over dial-peer matching, digit manipulation, path selection, and class of restriction.

After viewing this module you will be able to:

  • Explain the components of a Dial-Plan.
  • Build a scalable numbering plan.
  • Manipulate the calling and called numbers for proper presentation.
  • Describe the order in which dial-peers are matched.
  • Configure path selection.
  • Implement calling privileges.

Module 4: Gatekeeper and Cisco Unified Border Element

In this module you will get an in-depth understanding of the Registration, Admission, and Status (RAS) protocol and how it is used with gatekeeper.  You will gain an understanding of gatekeeper registration, call setup, and zone management.  Module 4 also covers configuring H.323 gateways to register with a gatekeeper and configuring gatekeeper call admission control (CAC).  Finally you will learn about the Cisco Unified Border Element or CUBE and how to configure VoIP to VoIP call legs.

After view this module you will be able to:

  • Describe RAS messages and call setup.
  • Explain how endpoints register to a gatekeeper.
  • Explain what gatekeeper zones are used for and how to configure them.
  • Register H.323 gateways to a gatekeeper and configure dial-peers to use RAS.
  • Describe how a gatekeeper provides CAC.
  • Explain and configure CUBE.

Module 5: Quality of Service

Quality of Service or QoS is probably one of the most important parts of a VoIP network.  This is because QoS is what maintains a high quality user experience.  In Module 5 you will learn about the different factors of QoS and learn how to configure QoS to provide predictable network behavior.  In this module you will learn about the various QoS standards such as DiffServ and the tools used to deploy it.  This module will also teach you about Layer 2 and Layer 3 QoS technologies.

After viewing this module you will be able to:

  • Describe the fundamentals of QoS.
  • Explain the different QoS standards.
  • Use Modular QoS CLI to configure QoS.
  • Describe Layer 2 and Layer 3 QoS technologies.
  • Explain and configure link efficiency, traffic conditioning, and Queuing.
  • Use AutoQoS to quickly deploy QoS.

Module 6: Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express

Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express (UCME) is a call processor that is configured in a Cisco IOS router.  In this module you will learn how to setup and configure a UCME environment for both SCCP and SIP.  You will learn about all the network components involved with the phone boot-up process and how to configure IP phones to use either SCCP or SIP as their call signaling protocol.

After viewing this module you will be able to:

  • Explain the features and requirement of UCME.
  • Explain the phone boot-up process and the infrastructure components used to support it.
  • Configure the network infrastructure to support UCME and IP phones.
  • List the firmware files that are installed on Cisco IP phones.
  • Configure UCME to support SCCP and SIP IP phones.
